SIP, SNAP, SPEND: INSIDE THE POWER OF LUXURY CAFÉS

Here’s some food for thought: What if I told you that one of the most powerful tools in luxury marketing right now
is a latte? Have you noticed an increase in luxury cafes popping up everywhere around the world recently? The sneaky designer pop-ups, selling iced coffees and croissants at the hottest locations in your city, and your entire Instagram feed is suddenly flocking to these cafes and posting the perfect stories. The Instagram feed that’s flocking to these cafes? That’s the classic aspirational customer, the underrated yet most important type of customer for luxury brands to solidify themselves as iconic.  According to a CNN Article published in Feb this year, “there are two groups of aspirational luxury consumers luxury brands want to win over: young professionals who will stay loyal as their spending power increases, and customers who may never spend $5,000 on a handbag but regularly buy lower-priced products”. These designer cafes are specifically designed to appeal to these two types of aspirational customers, and these customers are the most underrated, yet important future consumer of luxury brands for continuity and to solidify their spot as iconic. These cafĂ©s aren’t just trendy; they’re crafted to give us a taste of the luxury world without the hefty price tag. Maybe we’re not splurging on the $2,000 handbag, but we can treat ourselves to the $30 coffee and croissant. It’s a small indulgence, sure, but in that moment, we get to step into the fantasy that is refined, curated, and just within reach. Make no mistake, these designer cafes have been around for years, surely, you’ve heard of the iconic 1960’s movie starring Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In the movie, to Holly Golightly (played by the iconic Audrey Hepburn, of course), Tiffany and co. represents a rare sense of peace in a chaotic world, a place where “nothing very bad could happen.” Her fascination with the store isn’t about wealth, but about the calm, elegance, and security it symbolizes; everything she longs for but can’t quite grasp in her drifting, unpredictable life. This captures the aspiration of it all quite perfectly. In recent years, there’s been a rise in these luxury eateries: The YSL Cafe in Paris, the Cartier Cafe in Dubai, the Christian Louboutin train in Claridge’s hotel in London, and the Louis Vuitton Cafe in Bangkok; the list just keeps going. While we may not shop at these boutiques often, the cafes? They’re made for us. We’re all for the “loud luxury” and these designers are pulling us in using engraved cutlery, branded takeaway packaging and food, and iconic crockery, providing all the photo ops. My personal thought on the matter is, and this may sound a little conspiracy-theorist adjacent, but this rise in eateries is a subtle commentary on the current economic situation, with costs of living skyrocketing globally; grocery shopping has become a flex. Now imagine just how appealing iced lattes and croissants look. Affordable Indulgence or Economic Crisis?  Looking beyond customer retention, we can deduce that these modern cafes are the new Lipstick Effect. They give into the 2 most sought-after ways of appeal; loud luxury and consumable content. But before we dissect that, let’s talk about the lipstick effect.   Economists use the lipstick effect theory to deduce that consumers tend to buy small luxuries even in a declining economy, this is because they want to treat themselves in an effort to forget their financial issues. Therefore, increased sales of small luxuries indicate economic recessions.   This was proven by the Chair of Estee Lauder, Leonardo Lauder. In 2001, who told The WallStreet Journal, that the company sold more lipstick than usual following the 2001 terrorist attacks and basically theorized that lipstick can be a contrary economic indicator.  Funny how the world works, little trinkets can really expose a lot when you have an eye for reading between the lines. Now, designer cafes feed the phenomenon of affordable indulgence. Food is a universal craving, regardless of wealth or culture; tapping into this allows brands to attract new customers and retain returning customers, allowing both targets to interact with the brand in a fresh way. Beyond the Brand Experience. What’s genius about these cafes is that they go far beyond serving food, they serve fantasy. When you sip a cappuccino from a porcelain cup embossed with the Dior logo, you’re not just drinking coffee. You’re participating in a lifestyle, one that whispers elegance, exclusivity, and taste; quite literally. And make no mistake, the entire experience is crafted to be consumed twice: once in real life, and once online. The marble tabletops, the ornate pastries, the soft lighting, these details aren’t accidental. They’re designed for maximum shareability. The luxury isn’t just in the item, but in the environment, the brand story, and the moment itself. The modern consumer doesn’t just want to wear the brand; they want to live in it. And maybe even post it. Luxury’s Soft Power Move This isn’t just savvy marketing; it’s a soft power move by luxury houses. By inviting more people into their universe through edible experiences, they’re sowing emotional seeds that grow into brand loyalty. The person who spends $28 on a matcha latte today might be the person who invests in a $5,000 handbag tomorrow. It is also not by coincidence that these cafes often exist near the boutiques themselves or are tucked neatly inside luxury department stores. A cafĂ© acts like a warm-up, a soft introduction that eases customers into the brand’s space, culture, and vibe through a sensory experience. It creates comfort, and comfort leads to conversion. Let’s not forget that what we eat, and more importantly, where we eat, is becoming an extension of our identity. Just as we once flexed logos on our bags, now we flex latte art on our stories. The Louis Vuitton monogram might be stitched into leather on the shelf, but it’s also floating on oat milk in a glass. It’s a subtle shift from wearing status to consuming it. So, What’s the Price of Prestige?  It’s $22 for a truffle toast and an Americano in branded takeaway cups. But it’s also something more intangible: the cost of maintaining an image,

REST, REPEAT , AND REFRESH : LET ME TELL WHY

It’s probably never been easier to acknowledge that a lot of us work too much and too hard, and should take more time off. Indeed, according to the NY Times, the very idea of burnout seems to be having a cultural moment. “If you think you’re burned out, you’re burned out,” Jill Lepore wrote recently in The New Yorker, summarizing the workplace zeitgeist, “and if you don’t think you’re burned out, you’re burned out.” The time has come for workaholics and productivity junkies (and the rest of us) to be as deliberate, thoughtful and creative about taking breaks as they are for a reason. And that is about more than just using up vacation days. Your biggest obstacle to getting time off is probably you: It can be hard to give yourself that permission to do nothing when there’s just so much to do. Consider, however, that Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and chief executive, has said he sets aside “puttering time” every morning before taking any calls or meetings — basically carving out a scheduled chunk of do-nothing time. Are we really that much busier than him? The point isn’t just that it’s nice to goof off every so often — it’s that it’s necessary. And that’s true even if your ultimate goal is doing better work: Downtime allows the brain to make new connections and better decisions. Multiple studies have found that sustained mental attention without breaks is depleting, leading to inferior performance and decision-making. The good news is that at least some companies are starting to take breaks seriously. Lately, companies including LinkedIn and Roblox have experimented with mandatory vacation for all or most employees in the form of “spring break” periods. Actions like these that emphasize the value of time off represent a “profound” shift. There are various methods to unplug and rest. You could try literally ‘Unplugging’. The dream of a weeks’ long “digital detox”. Additionally, If you add to your routine a simple walk around the block to clear your head, make sure you really clear it. Spending the whole time checking social media and monitoring your step count is not a quality break. Leave your phone behind, make a point to notice something new and different on every walk. Turning the walk into a game ensures that your mind is engaged with the world rather than brooding about the work you’re supposedly taking a break from. If that’s too much, narrow it to completely unplugging from work. But wait — don’t such ideas sound kind of like another form of work? More goal-oriented tasks intended to boost productivity in the long run? Is developing a rest ethic ultimately another job? Perhaps so. But then again, maybe that’s the only language the unhealthily work-obsessed really understand. Share with us your thoughts? Should companies nudge workers to take vacation time? Should vacation be forced on the unwilling and the restless?

QUIET QUITTING, NOT SO QUIET?

Now that we’re back in full swing of things, the team has been obsessed with the hot topic of ‘Quiet Quitting’ as the seemingly “silent”, yet outspoken protest against the unreasonable way of juggling work and life balance. We’ve been reflecting recently on how work-life has dramatically changed since the pandemic, making us appreciate each moment in life. In general conversations with colleagues and other professionals, we discovered that post-pandemic many employees started questioning their jobs, based on how focused they had been for so long on growing and scaling their careers at the cost of their mental health. Silent quitting is becoming more of a joint moment wherein individuals are not ready to accommodate circumstances but would prefer to choose themselves over the organization to safeguard their most important priorities, relationships, and personal mental health. WHERE IT ALL STARTED In June 2022, BeyoncĂ© became officially the unofficial spokesperson of the Great Resignation movement. Well, she’s still working, but she sees you and your burnout: At midnight Tuesday morning, she released “Break My Soul,” an ode to house music, and giving HR your two weeks’ notice. (The Cut) In July 2022, American TikToker @zaidlepplin posted a video about Quiet ‘Quitting’ that went viral and got 3.5 million views, it stated: “Work isn’t your life WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Although some refer to the ‘Quiet Quitting’ labour trend as the “Great Resignation Movement”, it signifies a societal shift. While some organisations are experiencing staffing shortages, others are laying off employees. The message of uncertainty is being conveyed to Millennials and Gen Z by addressing the ups and downs, twists, and turns in work and life. Their interpretation is that hard work, effort, and dedication do not always guarantee advancement, a raise, or job security. There are three crucial areas that companies need to focus on to reduce the impact of quiet quitting and to inculcate the value of retaining employees for a longer time. (Forbes) A SENSE OF BELONGING The writer strongly feels that being a part of something is not enough to give one a sense of belonging. It all comes to making employees feel valued, seen, heard, and cherished. Employees often experience the feeling of isolation when they don’t feel like they belong in an organization’s culture, they may feel alone, disengaged from their work, and detached from the business as a whole. Detachment creates withdrawal, which can damage team morale and eventually have an effect on retention. By promoting and valuing the diversity of views, elevating listening for understanding, and giving employees the tools of freedom to speak up for themselves and one another, leaders may create or rebuild bridges to a sense of belonging. Team building activities like group yoga classes, retreats, and mindfulness applications create an effect of bringing people together. We strongly recommend taking suggestions from employees for activities for a personalized touch, after all, they know best what would make them feel better. INCLUSIVITY People are psychologically comfortable bringing their whole selves to work in an inclusive workplace culture because they know their unique voices and experiences will be acknowledged and valued. Leading by example and holding themselves and others firmly accountable for acting in ways that respect diversity is the initial step toward developing an inclusive culture. To create an environment where everyone feels included, a concrete effort is required. Futuristic leaders should focus on executive coaching which enhances the understanding of inclusion, equality, and diversity and brings out a fundamental change in the organizational culture. HEALTH AND WELLBEING The health and well-being of so many employees have been affected by underappreciation and overburden. More needs to be done to bring attention to these issues. We interviewed a close friend who mentioned that long-straining working hours led to the end of her marriage due to the unsustainable work-life balance which went on for years. The well-being of employees transcends personal accountability. Organizations must go above and beyond for their employees, offering both resources and flexibility to aid in their development of self-efficacy and resilience. A dire need for change is mandatory as employees are legitimately rejecting to continue giving up their health, happiness, and dignity for the sake of their company. At SENSATE TALENT we strongly believe in making a difference in the lives of our employees and the employees of our clients. Making the workplace a more interactive and inclusive place. Our experience manager Sihem shared with us that when she supports clients with recruitment, most candidates ask about the company’s work-life balance. Additionally, she mentioned, that they are ready to have a lower-paying salary with less stress and responsibility, to ensure their mental health. WHAT ARE WE DOING? We came up with a great idea to find out what makes each of our teammates happy daily. We ask each employee to write one thing that they are grateful for every day, they don’t have to mention their names. Once a week during our weekly huddle, we read these gratitude notes which make us feel all fuzzy inside. This is a great way to anonymously find out what employees feel and to practice gratitude. Another idea would be to create a wishing tree in the office and fulfil a few needs to induce optimistic vibes and spread happiness. This doesn’t need to be extravagant or exaggerated, small things like chocolate every week, cookies, team lunches, etc. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO? Now is the time that organizations need to come up with a change to take charge and accountability to resolve this issue. Morally an emotional resignation is a more disheartening resignation for a company’s employees. The need to bridge the gap between workplace culture divide is essential. Take advantage of the opportunity that quiet resignation provides you to reset your organizational culture and re-engage your staff.
